Can you remember what you wanted to become when you were a child? Are there any similarities to your present life? In my case, not a single one!! I guess I should thank my dad for not letting me pursue my dream of becoming an astronaut… But if there was anything that I didn’t want to do when I grew up, it was working with a computer. Poor little me!! Little did I know that I would be working with my laptop every single day! And that I would love it! Actually, I believe my real problem wasn’t the laptops themselves: I remember how sure I was that I didn’t want to spend my workdays in front of a computer in an office.

In my defense, I have to say that in those days, people who worked at their computers were supposed to be frustrated in their office cubicles, and that is NOT what a laptop life looks like now. Or it doesn’t have to. I won’t say that I’m working at the beach every single day, hopping from island to island whenever I feel like it. I wish! I would be lying, though. And yet, I try to make the best out of every opportunity to take my laptop with me and work outside from home, especially near the sea. I don’t know why, but a sea view relaxes me so much that I get more creative and productive than working in a “traditional” coworking space. So why shouldn’t I go for it?
So last week, while my children were (trying to start) surfing in Barcelona, I worked at a nearby beach bar. Taking my laptop to the beach was too risky, so I thought I’d try working with my 13” tablet and a keyboard. I couldn’t be happier!! I didn’t know that working with my iPad could be so easy!
Anyways, you could be thinking that working from the beach is something that not everyone can do. Not every work can be performed from a laptop – let alone an iPad! And although I have to admit that it’s hard to take some professions to the online world, I’m most certain that any office job can be performed online. From anywhere. Yep, also from the beach. You just need a little bit of creativity!

3 questions you need to ask yourself to start a new work life
Life doesn’t have to be harder than it already is. If we have to spend most of our day working to make a living, why can’t it be at a place that makes us feel GOOD?! And if your current work or boss doesn’t allow you to work from anywhere, why don’t you start your own thing? Or search for a job that allows you remote work? It’s as easy as taking some time to answer these three questions:
- What would your dream workday look like? Design your own life. Think of what makes YOU happy, and write it down. You don’t want to forget any details.
- What job you could you do to work that way? Do some research to help you figure it out! Feel free to check out this Reinvent Yourself series to get some inspiration!
- Which steps do you need to take first? Plan the steps to change gears and start a new (work) life! Don’t let anyone tell you how to spend your time.
- If your dream workday means starting a freelance career, let the Work for YouPlanner help you plan your first steps.
Some people might tell you that you shouldn’t complain. That you should be happy to have a job. That wanting to work from the beach is a delusion. That it can’t be a serious job, but hey, what can’t be serious is working 8-9 hours a day at a place that bores you to death and pretending that everything’s fine. You’ll hear that “It’s just how adult life is. Deal with it!” But that can’t be it. Right?!
Whether you want to work from the beach, from the top of a mountain, from a coffee shop, as a remote worker, or as a freelancer, it’s up to you. Just make sure that you choose how you want to spend your days!
